Intellectual Property

1. How can the intellectual property protect the rights of inventors, scientists, and artists?

As defined by WIPO, intellectual property refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce. Their rights can be protected by these by recognizing what they have done, not only the quality of those, but the impact that they have brought to the society. Works of inventors, scientists, and artists are all inventions or innovations. They are all unique, and it should always be appreciated and protected through intellectual property.

2. What acts are considered as violations of the Intellectual Property Code?

Production of copyrights of some authors and inventors without permission is considered a violations of Intellectual Property Code. Only that person who has the copyright of his/her work is allowed to produce copies of his/her work. Copying of a company’s trademark is also a violation.

3. What agencies are in-charge of implementing the Intellectual Property Code?

Government agency in the Philippines that is in-charge of implementing the Intellectual Property Code is the Intellectual Property Office. It is divided into six bureaus: Bureau of Patents, Bureau of Trademark, Bureau of Legal Affairs, Documentation, Information and Technology Transfer Bureau, Management Information System and EDP Bureau, and Administrative, Financial and Personnel Services Bureau.

4. What are your thoughts as a student about the prevalent violations of intellectual property code?

It should really be given attention by the authorities because it is a major problem in some high schools, universities, and/or colleges. Plagiarism is a great factor or problem when it comes to producing write-ups done by students in some schools all over the country. It should not be tolerated since students, when doing their theses or researchers, are producing works that really have impact or contribution to the society. They should stop producing works that are fabricated from works of other inventors or scientists. We, students, should always be careful on citing our sources and be more intellectual when producing works that have significant contribution to the society.
